A small eco-luxe hotel on Tannery Brook in Woodstock, built around a 15-foot waterfall — you can hear it from every room, and the sound carries through the whole property. Steps from Tinker Street and the village center, but the creek and tree canopy give it a more private character than the location suggests. Rooms have artist-curated turntables and vinyl collections, Bose speakers, floor-to-ceiling windows, and dedicated outdoor space. No restaurant on site, but the village's dining is a short walk. A Queen Anne Victorian built in 1886 on the hill above Margaretville, on the National Register of Historic Places, with the original slate roof intact. Six rooms and a two-room suite, each with a private bath. Jean runs it with a focus on breakfast: stuffed French toast, pancakes, homemade breads and muffins made to order. Small, consistently well-regarded, and the right fit for a trip where you want to arrive and be looked after without ceremony.

Livingston Manor is the center of gravity for Sullivan County's fly-fishing scene, and Arnold House is its best place to stay. The Beaverkill and Willowemoc rivers are minutes away, and the inn understands its audience — gear storage, local guides on request, owners who know the water. Non-fishers are welcome too; Livingston Manor has gotten genuinely interesting with good restaurants and independent shops.

Ski-in/ski-out lodging at Windham Mountain, with lift-accessed trails in winter and a golf course in summer. Windham is the Greene County alternative to Hunter — smaller, slightly more polished, different crowd energy. The mountain village is quiet in the shoulder seasons.

Formerly the Swiss Hutte Inn, gut-renovated and reopened in 2022 by the team behind Grand Army Bar, Black Seed Bagels, and The Smile in New York. Fourteen rooms in an alpine-styled building on the New York–Massachusetts border near Catamount Mountain. A tavern as social center, a seasonal pool in summer. The aesthetic (pink exterior, turquoise doors) is more intentional than quirky. Right for triangulating between the Catskills and the Berkshires.

A boutique inn and restaurant in Rosendale — a Hudson Valley town with its own distinct creative identity, anchored by the Rosendale Theatre and a community that has drawn artists and musicians for decades. The Feathers Tavern on site is worth the trip on its own. Carefully designed rooms, consistently excellent reviews, and a Main Street location that makes it easy to be in the middle of things.

The draw is the remove: land, quiet, and a part of the Catskills that hasn't been repackaged.

A Tibetan Buddhist-influenced wellness retreat in the mountains near Phoenicia — yoga, meditation, spa treatments, and healing programs on forested grounds. Not a boutique hotel. If you're looking for genuine stillness, this is one of the few places in the Catskills that actually delivers it.

Boiceville, NY · Boutique Inn

Built in 1928 as the summer estate of Richard Hellmann — of Hellmann's mayonnaise — on 200 acres on Mount Tycetonik, eight miles from Woodstock. Seven rooms split between the main house and a hillside cottage, including the Mobaccus suite with its 20-foot bay window overlooking the valley. The great room — cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace, large picture window — frames the panoramic mountain view that was the original selling point and still is. Sauna, koi pond, and trails on the grounds. Primarily a wedding venue now, which means B&B guests get the run of a grand estate on non-event weekends. The Catskills have always attracted exactly this kind of New York money.
