Hart's Location · Inn

An 1860s granite mansion on a 100-acre estate in Crawford Notch, with every one of the fifteen rooms having a wood-burning fireplace — not a design feature, a structural fact of the original building. Two pet-friendly cottages for those with dogs. The estate has 8,000 feet of Saco River frontage and two natural swimming holes. Four-course dinners are available Wednesday through Sunday; breakfast is included in all stays. The White Mountain National Forest is the backyard.

East Madison · Resort

A family-run four-season resort on 1,300 acres above Purity Lake in East Madison, operating since 1914 and running King Pine Ski Area as its own mountain. The lake — 100 clear acres, motor-free — has a sandy beach with waterskiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding in summer. Twenty kilometers of groomed snowshoe trails thread through the Hoyt Wildlife Sanctuary on the grounds in winter. Twenty-three guest rooms plus condos, cottages, and lodge units. One of the few family-owned New Hampshire resorts that genuinely operates year-round.

Sugar Hill · Inn

A 1789 farmhouse inn on Sugar Hill, with views of the Franconia Range from the dining room and most rooms. The restaurant has earned the Distinguished Restaurants of North America award and the Wine Spectator Award — two anchors that have made this a destination for non-guests as well as overnight visitors. Breakfast is made-to-order, baked in-house. The cottage rooms in addition to the historic main house allow for more private configurations. Sugar Hill sits above Franconia on a ridge that catches light particularly well at sunset.

A 1902 resort at Bretton Woods — where the 1944 international monetary conference established the post-war financial order and created the IMF. The building, a National Historic Landmark, has a red tile roof and white facade that makes it visible from the valley floor. 200+ rooms, a Donald Ross-designed golf course, the Bretton Woods ski area, and a full-service spa. The Crawford Notch landscape around it is among the most dramatic in the White Mountains. The architecture and the history justify the scale.

North Conway · Hotel

An 87-acre resort in North Conway bordering White Mountain National Forest, positioned directly adjacent to Cathedral Ledge and Whitehorse Ledge — the two premier sport-climbing destinations in the Northeast. An 18-hole golf course with mountain views on three sides, the Balance Spa, and the Ledges Restaurant and Tullamore Tavern dining program. Family-owned with decades-long staff tenure; the operational consistency is noticeable. Significantly more affordable than comparable resort properties in the valley.

A restored 1896 Victorian inn on the Omni resort grounds — more intimate than the main hotel, equally grand.

Beans Grant · Hut

The most remote AMC hut, nestled between Carter Dome and Wildcat Mountain at 3,288 feet.

Bethlehem · Inn

A historic resort in Bethlehem anchored by a 1914 Donald Ross-designed golf course. The original Maplewood hotel complex dates to 1876 — Presidents Grant and Roosevelt were guests — and burned in the 1960s. The surviving 1889 Casino building, now the 20-room Inn at Maplewood, is available for group bookings (minimum 8 rooms required). Individual golfers and day visitors access the course; the inn operates primarily for group events and golf packages.

Thornton · Resort

A resort in Thornton on the Pemigewasset Valley floor, anchored by an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course — ranked among the top Nicklaus designs by value worldwide. Lake Harold, a private body of water on the property, has a beach, paddleboarding, and ice skating in winter. WellNest Spa on site. Accommodations range from guest rooms to lakeside villas and gambrel homes sleeping up to twelve. A four-season destination without a ski area of its own, but with Loon Mountain a short drive.

Eaton · Inn

A 17-room inn on the slopes of Foss Mountain in Eaton with panoramic views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range, originally the home of Frank Simonds, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Kevin Flynn and Jennifer Kovach have run the property since the 1990s, building a culinary reputation through Max's Restaurant and Pub — 40 seats, open to the public, seasonal menu using local and organic ingredients. Some rooms have fireplaces; all have mountain views.

Franconia · Inn

A 29-room country inn on 65 acres in Easton Valley, welcoming guests since 1863 — the current white clapboard building was rebuilt in the 1930s after fire. Views from every direction of Mount Lafayette, Franconia Notch, and the Kinsman Range. Horseback riding on the property in summer; glider rides from the on-site soaring port; 40 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails in winter. A pub, a dining room, two porches, and a library. One of the more complete White Mountains inn experiences.

Jackson is one of the more complete small resort villages in New England: the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation maintains one of the largest cross-country networks in the Northeast, Black Mountain is nearby, and the village's covered bridge is one of the most photographed in New Hampshire.

North Conway · Lodge

A 20-room bed and breakfast in North Conway with a direct connection to Babe Ruth: his daughter Julia Ruth Stevens co-owned the property with her husband Richard Flanders in the 1940s, and Babe Ruth was a regular visitor, staying in Room 2. That room is still furnished with the original pieces the Babe used and filled with memorabilia from his visits. Steps from Cranmore ski area. The pool, tennis courts, and barn are from the original 1860s farmhouse era.

A Swiss-inspired inn at the junction of routes 302 and 16 in Glen — a useful location between North Conway and Crawford Notch. Rooms with in-room fireplaces; on-site spa and wellness amenities. The alpine exterior sets the tone before you check in.

Sugar Hill · Inn

Twenty-eight rooms in the surviving 1880s annex of the original Sunset Hill grand hotel on Sugar Hill — the main hotel accommodated 350 guests before it closed in 1973 and was demolished. The annex was restored and reopened in 2015. Views from the ridge reach both the White Mountains to the east and Vermont's Green Mountains to the west. An on-site golf course and dining on the grounds. The setting is the draw. In 2026 it reopened under Hideaway Inns as Hideaway Inn Franconia Notch, with 32 redesigned rooms.

North Conway · Inn

The summer estate of carpet baron Erastus Bigelow, built in 1872, on 33 private acres one mile north of North Conway. The English manor character visible today — the oak woodwork, lead-glass windows, beamed ceilings, carved oak detailing — comes from an 1895 redesign by Bigelow's daughter Helen Bigelow Merriman. Twenty-six rooms, seven with working wood-burning fireplaces and twelve with Jacuzzi tubs. The Library Martini Lounge, with its fieldstone fireplace and artisan-carved paneling, is the social center.

Twin Mountain · Hut

An AMC backcountry hut accessible only by a 2.8-mile trail with bunk beds, home-cooked meals, and waterfall views.

Shelburne · Inn

A 160-acre resort in Shelburne on Route 2 in the Androscoggin River valley, with northern White Mountain peaks visible on three sides. Direct access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and snowmobiling; Jericho Mountain State Park — the largest snowmobile park in the East — is close. Pool, hot tub, and restaurant on site. The northern valley location is quieter than North Conway or Lincoln, which is the point.

Whitefield · Resort

A grand 1865 resort in Whitefield with sweeping views of the Presidential Range — including Mount Washington — from the property's elevated position. The Tower Spa, a golf course, and local-ingredient dining are the primary amenities. The renovation, completed in the 2000s, restored the Victorian architecture without modernizing it out of existence. Less famous than the Omni Mount Washington to the south, which means easier access and lower prices for comparable grandeur.

A 96-room resort on a ridge above Jackson Village operating since 1879, when the Gale family first opened the farmhouse to twelve summer guests. The current building grew around that original structure — the 280-foot wraparound veranda and the 1926 hydroelectric elevator (still on display) are original features. A nine-hole USGA-rated golf course on what were once the inn's pastures. Member of Historic Hotels of America. The Jackson village setting — covered bridge, cross-country network, Black Mountain — does considerable work around the edges.

Lincoln · Resort

A family resort on Profile Lake with indoor and outdoor pools, a lake beach, and Loon Mountain nearby.

North Conway · Inn

A 17-room inn built in 1785 by a Revolutionary War veteran granted the land for his service — one of the oldest continuously operating inns in New Hampshire. The views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range from the property earned a Yankee Magazine Best View from an Inn designation and a Frommer's Top 15 Views in the World from a Hotel citation. The dining room leans into the setting: candlelit, with tableside Caesar salads and flambé desserts.

Jackson · Inn

An 1895 inn in Jackson Village, attributed to Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White, now an adults-only property with a full spa and one of the more serious restaurants in the Mount Washington Valley. The restaurant, Forty at Thorn Hill, has a Wine Spectator Award and a menu focused on locally sourced ingredients. The Wine Cellar and Granite Room are private dining spaces within the inn. Jackson itself is the quieter alternative to North Conway — a village with a covered bridge, cross-country ski network, and a ski mountain (Black Mountain) of its own.
