The Berkshires design hotel moment arrived later than the Catskills wave and with a different aesthetic — less spare modernism, more considered renovation of historic properties. The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA turned five Victorian mill houses into art-adjacent lodging. The guests visiting MASS MoCA, the Clark, or Tanglewood expect a certain standard now, and the better properties have responded. There are fewer design-forward options here than in the Catskills, but the ones that exist have thought carefully about how place informs design.

A former roadside motor lodge on the banks of the Hoosic River, reconceived as a 46-room design hotel and outdoor campus. Woodland trails, sculptural installations, riverbank vistas, and a live music series — all on 80 forested acres. The basecamp position for MASS MoCA, which is minutes away, is the point. TOURISTS Homes, a cluster of 19th-century houses in the adjacent Blackinton Historic District, opened in 2024 as a companion property for longer stays.

Forty-seven rooms across a converted row of Victorian townhouses directly across from MASS MoCA. Each house is painted a slightly different color — the exterior charm is real, not manufactured. Indoor/outdoor pool, bonfire pit, nature trails. The eclectic decor leans into the Victorian bones rather than smoothing them over. One of the best-positioned properties in the Berkshires for anyone making the art the point of the trip.
Guest House at Field Farm

Built in 1948 for modern art collectors Lawrence and Eleanor Bloedel, this five-room Bauhaus-influenced house sits on 300 acres of conservation land with views of Mount Greylock. The rooms are filled with original modern art and mid-century furniture — the collection is genuine, not decorative. Sculpture gardens, miles of trails, and downtown Williamstown a few minutes away. One of the most architecturally and artistically distinctive small properties in New England.
Life House Lenox

A 1970s roadside motel on the north edge of Lenox, gutted and redesigned by the Life House hospitality group. The transformation is complete: the lobby and cocktail bar are seriously designed, with plush eclectic armchairs and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Warm, not kitschy. The kind of conversion that makes you reconsider what a motel can be without overselling the premise.
East Rock Inn
Great Barrington · Inn / Motel
A mid-century motel at the base of East Rock Mountain, renovated into 18 modern rooms with clean design, some with fireplaces and full kitchens. Less than a mile from Ski Butternut. The renovation is genuine rather than gestural — studios through two-bedroom apartments, thoughtful materials, and a price point that sits well below the Lenox corridor.
Hotel on North
Pittsfield · Hotel
A boutique hotel in the center of Pittsfield — the Berkshires' largest city — converted from a 19th-century building on North Street. Art gallery on the ground floor, restaurant, and a location that positions it as the practical midpoint between North County and South County. Pittsfield has a genuine arts scene anchored by Barrington Stage Company and the Colonial Theatre, and Hotel on North is the best way to be inside it.
