White Mountains Hiking Basecamps
The White Mountains hold the most demanding hiking terrain in the Northeast — the Presidential Range, Franconia Ridge, and the Pemigewasset Wilderness between them. The AMC hut system threads through the mountains above treeline: eight fully staffed backcountry huts connected by trail, delivering meals at altitude to hikers who earned them. Below treeline, the inn culture in North Conway, Jackson, and Franconia has been organizing itself around hikers for generations.

- •The AMC hut system is unlike anything else in New England: eight huts positioned along a 50-mile ridgeline trail, fully staffed in summer with meals included. Lakes of the Clouds Hut at 5,012 feet near the Mount Washington summit is the highest. Book months in advance for summer weekends.
- •Franconia Notch concentrates the best day-hiking in the western White Mountains: the Franconia Ridge Loop (8.9 miles, above treeline) is consistently ranked among the best day hikes in the Northeast. Inns in Franconia, Bethlehem, and Sugar Hill are the natural base.
- •North Conway and Jackson anchor the eastern hiking corridor — access to Mount Washington via the auto road or Tuckerman Ravine trail, and dozens of shorter day hikes through the Mount Washington Valley.
