    Where to Stay in Catskill

Catskill is a small city on the west bank of the Hudson River, quieter and less developed than Hudson on the opposite shore. The Thomas Cole National Historic Site — the home and studio of the founder of the Hudson River School of painting — is the main cultural destination. The city has some independent restaurants and a developing arts scene, but its character is rougher around the edges than Hudson or Rhinebeck. For visitors, Catskill functions primarily as a river-access point and a gateway to the Catskills themselves.
