Bed & Breakfasts in the Berkshires
The Berkshires kept its bed and breakfasts when most of New England traded them for boutique hotels, and the reason is Tanglewood. A summer festival that sells multi-night stays to the same audience year after year rewards exactly what a B&B does well — ten rooms, an owner who remembers you, and breakfast you do not have to leave the house for. What the region has as a result is unusually deep: twelve properties here, concentrated in Lenox and Lee, most of them in houses built between 1806 and 1912, several with pools, and almost all run by the people who own them. The important distinction is not quality but geography. Lenox puts you inside the village and charges for it; Lee, ten minutes south and often half the price, is where the value has quietly collected.

Stonover Farm
For the smallest, most personal stay
Three rooms and two cottages on a working farm in Lenox, with an organic garden, a pond and trail access. The owners know every guest by name, which is the appeal and also the limit — there is nowhere to be anonymous. Kripalu is minutes away, which makes this a natural pairing with a retreat day.
Chambery Inn
For the building
An 1885 schoolhouse on Main Street in Lee, converted to nine rooms with the original blackboards still on the walls. The high ceilings and light the building was designed around survived the conversion intact, so the rooms are substantially larger than B&B standard. Walkable to Lee's restaurants, and among the cheapest of the twelve.
Devonfield Inn
For grounds and a pool
Thirty-two acres outside Lee with a heated outdoor pool, a tennis court, and fireplaces and whirlpool tubs in the upgraded rooms of a Federal-style main house. Sits between Lenox and Stockbridge without being in either, which keeps the price sane while leaving both ten minutes away. The most resort-like of the twelve.

An 1806 Federal mansion at the top of the village, eleven rooms with fireplaces and antiques, and the Church Street restaurants immediately outside. One of the oldest operating inns in Lenox and one of very few that put you in the village rather than on its edge — which is the whole argument for paying Lenox rates.

For value in an expensive town
A ten-room Victorian on a quiet Lenox street with a heated pool, an on-site massage studio and an extensive poetry collection that gets used — there are weekend readings, in the town where Wharton, Melville and Hawthorne all worked. Ten minutes from Tanglewood at a price closer to Lee's than Lenox's.

A short walk to the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the right size to stay personal while still having somewhere to sit that is not your room.

For horses and quiet
Twenty-seven acres in Richmond with horses on the property and riding available, between Pittsfield and the Connecticut border. Genuinely rural and unhurried, with a breakfast worth getting up for. Far enough out that it works as a base for the central Berkshires without paying the Lenox premium.

For the lowest price in the county
Five rooms in Sheffield, one of the quieter and more rural towns in southern Berkshire County, near Bartholomew's Cobble and the Appalachian Trail. Cooked-to-order breakfasts at weekends and a fireplace in the lobby. Less discovered than the Lenox–Stockbridge corridor, priced accordingly, and the owner will remember you.
