Spa Resorts & Wellness Retreats in the Berkshires
No other part of the Northeast has this concentration. Canyon Ranch opened in Lenox in 1989, Kripalu has been in Stockbridge since 1983, and Miraval took over the old Cranwell estate in 2020 — three destination wellness institutions within five miles of each other, and a fourth on the way: Elm Court, a Vanderbilt-era estate in Stockbridge being rebuilt as a 74-room hotel with a 15,000-square-foot spa, due around 2030. The concentration is not an accident. The Gilded Age left the Berkshires a supply of large estates on serious acreage, exactly the footprint a residential wellness programme needs, and Tanglewood taught the region to sell multi-night stays. What that leaves the visitor is a genuine choice of philosophy rather than of brand — and, underneath the three big names, a couple of far cheaper properties with a real sauna and a real massage table.
5 Properties
The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA
North Adams · Inn
Forty-seven rooms across a converted row of Victorian townhouses directly across from MASS MoCA. Each house is painted a slightly different color — the exterior charm is real, not manufactured. Indoor/outdoor pool, bonfire pit, nature trails. The eclectic decor leans into the Victorian bones rather than smoothing them over. One of the best-positioned properties in the Berkshires for anyone making the art the point of the trip.
Canyon Ranch Lenox
Lenox · Resort / Wellness
A dedicated wellness resort in a Victorian mansion on 120 Berkshire acres — fitness programming, spa treatments, nutritional consulting, and a medical team on site. All-inclusive rates cover meals, classes, and most activities. Travel + Leisure Top 10 Destination Spa. This is not a hotel that offers wellness amenities. It is a wellness institution that offers rooms. The distinction matters if you're choosing between the two modes.

Miraval Berkshires
Lenox · Resort / Wellness
The former Cranwell Resort on 380 acres, reborn as a Hyatt Miraval wellness property. All-inclusive programming covers spa, fitness, mindfulness, and outdoor activities. The historic 1894 mansion anchors the property. Golf remains on-site. The transformation is complete: this is no longer a resort that dabbles in wellness — it has fully committed to the Miraval model of purposeful travel.
Brook Farm Inn
Lenox · Inn / B&B
A ten-room Victorian inn on a quiet Lenox street, known for an extensive poetry collection, weekend readings, and the kind of literary atmosphere that the town's history — Edith Wharton, Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne all spent time here — suggests you should be able to find. Massage services on site. A pool. Ten minutes from Tanglewood. One of the better values in a town that has gotten expensive.
Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health
Stockbridge · Retreat Center
The largest yoga and health retreat in North America — on 120 acres above Lake Mahkeenac in Stockbridge. Rooms range from dormitory to private; rates include all meals and access to the program schedule. Workshops, retreats, and teacher trainings run year-round across yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and health. Not a spa hotel. A functioning wellness institution with serious programming, where lodging is in service of the curriculum.
How to Choose
Canyon Ranch Lenox
For the clinical approach
A Victorian mansion on 120 acres with a medical team, nutritionists and fitness programming on staff — a wellness institution that happens to offer rooms, rather than a hotel with a spa. All-inclusive rates cover meals, classes and most activities. Right if you want measurement, assessment and a plan to take home; too structured if you want to be left alone.
Miraval Berkshires
For intention over instruction
The former Cranwell Resort on 380 acres, now the full Hyatt Miraval model: spa, mindfulness, equine work and outdoor programming, all-inclusive, anchored by an 1894 mansion with the golf course still attached. Softer and more exploratory than Canyon Ranch — its own general manager calls the two "the yin to our yang". The largest grounds of the three.
Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health
For the curriculum, at a third of the price
The largest yoga and health retreat in North America, on 120 acres above Lake Mahkeenac, running year-round workshops and teacher trainings across yoga, meditation and Ayurveda. Rates include all meals and programme access, and rooms run from dormitory to private. Not a spa and not pretending to be: you come for the schedule, and the lodging is plain by design.
The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA
For a sauna without a programme
A row of Victorian townhouses opposite MASS MoCA with a four-season heated pool, an outdoor hot tub and a traditional Finnish sauna, plus massage bookable on request. No treatment menu and no curriculum — the thermal facilities are simply there, included in the amenity fee. The best value in the region for anyone who wants the sauna and the art rather than the assessment.
Brook Farm Inn
For a massage in a Victorian inn
Ten rooms on a quiet Lenox street with an on-site massage studio, a heated pool and an extensive poetry collection that gets used — weekend readings, in the town where Wharton and Melville worked. Ten minutes from Tanglewood and one of the better values in Lenox. The right answer for a Tanglewood weekend with a massage attached, rather than a wellness trip as such.

- •The three destination resorts are all-inclusive and priced accordingly, but they are not interchangeable: Canyon Ranch is clinical, Miraval is intention-led, Kripalu is a yoga curriculum. Picking on price alone is how people end up in the wrong one.
- •Kripalu is dramatically cheaper than its two neighbours — rates include all meals and the full programme schedule, with rooms from dormitory to private. The trade is that lodging is genuinely secondary to the curriculum.
- •If you want a sauna and a massage rather than a programme, The Porches Inn in North Adams has a four-season heated pool, an outdoor hot tub and a traditional Finnish sauna, and Brook Farm Inn in Lenox has an on-site massage studio and a pool. Both cost a fraction of the destination resorts.
- •Lenox and Stockbridge are five minutes apart and hold four of these five. North Adams, where The Porches Inn sits, is 45 minutes north and pairs wellness with MASS MoCA rather than Tanglewood.
