The Catskills wellness scene has grown well past the spa weekend, and it now splits into three genuinely different things. There are destination spa resorts, where the treatment menu and the thermal circuit are the reason you booked: Emerson in Mount Tremper, Inness on 220 acres in Accord, Piaule with its spa cut into the hillside. There are retreats where wellness is a programme rather than an amenity — Menla's Tibetan Buddhist practice near Phoenicia, Hemlock Neversink's 230 private acres in Sullivan County. Five suites on Stony Clove Creek in Phoenicia — adults-only (16+), self-serve, and intentionally unhurried. The property has a waterfront sauna positioned directly over the creek, a natural cold plunge in the creek itself, and a saltwater swimming pool. Suites range from the standalone Riverside Cottage to the two-bedroom Meadow Suite. There is no front desk and no restaurant; the design is earthy and considered without being precious about it. The sauna-to-creek sequence is the most direct version of the cold-plunge ritual anywhere in the Catskills — most properties route it through a spa menu.

For the architecture
Twenty-four Garrison Architects cabins on 50 acres, with the spa built into the hillside: mineral plunge, sauna, steam room, yoga studio. The most rigorously designed property in the region and the quietest — closer to a landscape installation than a hotel. Best for two people who want to talk to nobody.
Hemlock Neversink
For a programme, not a treatment
Two hundred thirty acres in Neversink with private trails and wellness programming that runs past the spa menu — pools, sauna sequences, movement. For people who want the stay to change something rather than pause it. The most remote of the Sullivan County options.
Emerson Resort & Spa
For the reliable spa weekend
A full-service spa resort in Mount Tremper that has been doing this longer than the boutique arrivals around it. Less design-led than Piaule or Inness, and better for it if what you actually want is a treatment booked at a sensible hour and a room afterwards. The World's Largest Kaleidoscope is on site and is genuinely worth the ten minutes.

For retreat, not spa
Tibetan Buddhist-rooted practice on forested grounds near Phoenicia — yoga, meditation and healing programmes, with lodging in service of the schedule. Not a boutique hotel and not trying to be. The right answer if structured stillness is the point; the wrong one if you want a treatment menu and a good dinner.

Five adults-only suites on Stony Clove Creek with a sauna built out over the water and a cold plunge in the creek itself. No front desk, no restaurant, no treatment list. The most direct version of the sauna-and-plunge ritual in the Catskills, and the smallest property here by some distance.

The Hemlock Spa runs Kneipp-inspired treatments — alternating hot and cold water therapy — with an outdoor sauna, hot tub and movement studio, on 55 acres above Kenoza Lake. Pairs a serious spa with a genuine restaurant and a lake, which none of the others quite manage at this price.
Mohonk Mountain House
For the whole family
A Victorian castle on a private lake, run by the same family since 1869, with a full spa, indoor and outdoor pools and 2,000 acres of Shawangunk trails. Three meals a day are in the rate. The one property here that works with children in tow without anyone compromising.

- •The range is the point. Menla near Phoenicia is a Buddhist retreat centre with a curriculum; Piaule and Inness are design-led spa compounds; The Bend is five adults-only suites with a creek-side sauna and no front desk. These are not competing versions of the same weekend.
- •Sullivan County holds the two strongest all-in options and both sit well off the Thruway: Hemlock Neversink's 230 acres of private trails, and Kenoza Hall's Hemlock Spa, which runs Kneipp water therapies on a 55-acre lake.
