Where to Stay in North Hudson

North Hudson is a town off I-87 in the eastern Adirondacks, and Elk Lake Lodge is its main lodging. The lodge sits on 600-acre Elk Lake, about 2,000 feet up, inside a 12,000-acre private preserve protected by a state conservation easement and reached by a dirt road. The preserve's 40 miles of trails, and boating and fishing on Elk Lake and Clear Pond, are for lodge guests only, and all meals are included. The Dix Range rises above the lake, and the public Elk Lake trailhead nearby leads to Dix Mountain and the other eastern High Peaks.

    Why Stay in North Hudson

    • •Elk Lake and the surrounding preserve are open only to lodge guests, so there are no public crowds on the water or the private trails.
    • •The Dix Range is close by, with trails to Dix Mountain from the Elk Lake trailhead.
    • •A category of property that's essentially disappeared from American travel: a private wilderness lake lodge in real High Peaks terrain.

    What Makes This Area Interesting

    • •Dix Mountain and Dix Range: trailhead accessible from Elk Lake Lodge; a full range from Dix (4,857 ft) to the Grace and South Dix peaks.
    • •Keene Valley: about 25 minutes north via Route 73; the Garden trailhead for the main High Peaks.
    • •Schroon Lake: 15 miles south via Route 9; additional lodging and a more commercial lake town.
