Spa lodging in the Catskills comes in three forms. Some properties run a full spa with a treatment menu, pools and a thermal circuit. A larger group of smaller hotels have a sauna, a cold plunge or a creek instead of a treatment program. A few places are built around a program of yoga, meditation or retreats.

The resort spas suit a weekend built around treatments; the smaller hotels suit hikers who want a sauna at the end of the day. Only a handful of these properties set an age minimum, and a few sell day passes to visitors who are not staying overnight.

Full-Service Resort Spas

These properties run a spa with a treatment menu and staff, alongside pools and heat rooms.

Hemlock Neversink opened in 2023 on a 230-acre property in Neversink that was formerly the New Age Health Spa. It has 33 rooms, and its spa has 12 treatment rooms, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a steam room and outdoor saunas. Kenoza Hall, run by the same group, Foster Supply Hospitality, has 22 rooms and 10 bungalows on 55 acres above Kenoza Lake in Sullivan County. Its Hemlock Spa offers Kneipp-inspired water treatments, an outdoor sauna and hot tub, a pool and a movement studio.

Farther east, Inness in Accord has a 7,000-square-foot spa and bathhouse with a sauna, a steam room and a tranquility pool, plus two saltwater pools and a 9-hole golf course across 220 acres. Piaule has 24 cabins on 50 acres near Catskill and a spa with a bluestone steam room, a cedar sauna and a cold plunge pool. On Route 28, Emerson Resort & Spa in Mount Tremper pairs a full-service spa with 53 rooms. Mohonk Mountain House is just outside the Catskills, in the Shawangunks near New Paltz; it has a full spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and rates that include three meals a day.

Saunas, Plunges, and Creeks at Smaller Hotels

Many of the region's smaller hotels have no treatment menu but do have a sauna, a hot tub or a creek to swim in. For travelers who want heat and cold after a day outside, this group often fits better than a resort spa.

In the Phoenicia area, The Bend has 5 suites on Stony Clove Creek, a waterfront sauna, a cold plunge in the creek itself and a saltwater pool. Eastwind Oliverea Valley, at the McKenley Hollow trailhead in Big Indian, has dry saunas and a heated outdoor pool open year-round. Urban Cowboy Lodge has cedar soaking tubs, an Estonian sauna and a seasonal pool across 200 acres, and Onteora, The Mountain House has a sauna on its 200-acre estate.

Elsewhere, Hotel Vienna in Windham has a heated indoor pool and a barrel sauna, Hasbrouck House in Stone Ridge has a cedar sauna and a cold plunge, and Callicoon Hills has two Scandinavian saunas, a yoga deck and a large pool. The Roxbury Motel has its own small spa, the Shimmer Spa, with a sauna, a steam room and treatment rooms.

Adults-Only and Age Minimums

Only a few of the Catskills properties in this directory set an age minimum, and the policies differ in the details. Hemlock Neversink accepts guests 16 and older, and has opened to families during some holiday weeks. The Bend is also for guests 16 and older.

Policies change, and some properties apply them only to the spa, not to the rooms. Anyone planning a trip around an adults-only setting should check the current policy on the property's own site before booking.

Retreats Built Around a Program

Menla, near Phoenicia, is a retreat center run as a project of Tibet House US, with group retreats on Buddhism, yoga and holistic health and its own Dewa Spa. Many guests come for a scheduled program rather than an open-ended stay.

Travelers who want a structured program with classes and meals included may also look at the Berkshires, roughly two hours' drive east, where Kripalu, Canyon Ranch and Miraval Berkshires run all-inclusive or program-based stays. The Berkshires wellness collection lists them together.

Day Passes and Choosing an Area

Some spas sell access to people who are not staying overnight. Hemlock Neversink's day pass includes a 60-minute massage or facial and lunch at its restaurant, Bittersweet. Day-pass availability varies by property and season, so it is worth checking before planning a visit around one.

The Route 28 corridor around Phoenicia and Mount Tremper puts saunas close to hiking and creek swimming. Sullivan County, home to Hemlock Neversink, Kenoza Hall and Callicoon Hills, is on the southwestern side of the region.
