Rustic White Mountains Lodges & Inns
New Hampshire's White Mountains have a lodging tradition rooted in the 19th-century grand hotel era — the old resort infrastructure that catered to rail-age summer visitors who came to escape city heat. Most of those grand hotels are gone, but the smaller lodges and inns that grew around them have survived into a contemporary form. The White Mountains rustic property is less architecturally distinct than the Adirondacks Great Camp tradition, but it's genuine: rough timber, fieldstone fireplaces, wide porches facing the mountains, the specific New England quality of a place that's been weathering for a century.

A 160-acre resort in Shelburne on Route 2 in the Androscoggin River valley, with northern White Mountain peaks visible on three sides. Direct access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and snowmobiling; Jericho Mountain State Park — the largest snowmobile park in the East — is close. Pool, hot tub, and restaurant on site. The northern valley location is quieter than North Conway or Lincoln, which is the point.

That room is still furnished with the original pieces the Babe used and filled with memorabilia from his visits. Steps from Cranmore ski area. - •The North Conway area has the most intact cluster of older mountain inns — properties that were built for rail-era visitors and have been maintained, renovated, and re-inhabited without losing their original mountain inn character. The bones are usually more interesting than the interiors.
